CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

Restoring Order

Later, Fydelis knew, the visions would haunt Gareth. It was just another stroke of sick irony that would leave Fydelis to be the only one to turn to for comfort. While part of him wanted to appreciate this fact, the rest of him hoped that Gareth would take one of the many grateful young women to his bed tonight, although the thought of that made him weak, and his stomach clenched with nausea.

Now that Fydelis was separate from Gareth, Gareth's body would realize its strain. He stood back, letting Gareth reach the square first. The Crusader's shield clattered onto the flagstone walk and he collapsed to his knees, leaning heavily on his sword.

One by one, doors opened, and occupants flowed out, rushing towards him like a river of concern or going to their knees to thank the Creator and beg his forgiveness.

Fydelis turned a small stone around with the toe of his boot, not wanting to see how they all came to Gareth, touched him, and carted him off to a place of comfort and recovery. These were things that Fydelis could not offer him, and that Gareth would not want. Not from a demon. He sighed, feeling sufficiently sorry for himself, and began to turn away when hands touched his shoulders. He looked back to see a young woman he didn't know, and caught Gareth offering him a weak smile over his shoulder.

"He asked for you. I'll take you where he's going."

Where they ended up was at the church in the center of town— the only building large enough to hold the crowd. Someone brought in a folded cot and Gareth lay down, still in full armor. He politely refused the many offers of help to strip it from him and closed his eyes. Around the edges of the room, stood the scantily clad prostitutes and their merchant guests, all looking with shifting and nervous glances at the large group of townspeople inside. A small scuffle started as some of the townspeople tried to drive the whores from the building, and Fydelis saw that Gareth had opened his eyes and attempted to sit up.

Annoyed, Fydelis stormed through the group, shoving the arguing parties apart. "This is a church. Unless any of you are more fit to judge than that priest who has saved your miserable lives, I suggest you stop bickering like fools!" He pointed towards Gareth to be sure they knew of which priest he spoke, and all eyes followed the trail with guilt.

"It's true! The Creator sent him to us!" Rul's daughter Sessa cried out, her arms spread wide in appeal. The prostitutes and merchants went to their knees, praying as had the others outside and begging forgiveness. Fydelis huffed in exasperation, rolling his eyes. In truth, he thought the whole lot of them could burn in the Abyss, he just wanted to get on with things.

"Get up. The Creator will not forgive any of you by simply kneeling like simpering dolts. You all let this town fall under the influence of a man who'd sold his pitiful soul.
